Mardi Gras 2010
Mardi Gras is a huge celebration here in Burlington. There is a parade up Church Street where everyone comes downtown and gets as many beads as possible.
This year was no exception and was my favorite year so far. My friends and I rode the free CCTA bus downtown with a ton of our classmates and enjoyed all the fun activities. Here is a video of some of the sights from our prime location on the parade route.

Time is Flying!
This past week flew by because I only had one day of classes due to the Presidents Weekend break.
I didn't do too much this past weekend. On Friday I cleaned up the house and then hung out with my roommates before they left for home. Two of my roommates, Kelly and Lauren, are student teachers and their February break is this week so they both have vacation. So it has been Sarah and I holding down the fort here since Saturday.
On Saturday we went to a senior showcase of one of our classmates over in McCarthy Arts Center on campus. It was really cool to see how many instruments he could play and also to hear a new instrument he had learned while studying abroad in Australia last year.
After that we went over to the 300's field to watch the Rumble for the Thunder Dome aka a Ski and Snowboard Jib Fest event. Same deal as last time where SMC students do cool tricks off a mound built over on campus.
Yesterday was devoted to getting work done and watching the Olympics. After an awesome win for the US Men's Hockey Team I finally got to sleep.
This upcoming weekend is Mardi Gras down on Church Street so I should have some good things to blog about then. Until then enjoy the week and don't forget about IHOP's free pancake day tomorrow (Tuesday 2/23).

Another Long Weekend
Each February we receive an extra long weekend for President's Day so we have the Monday and Tuesday off. I decided to stay up here in VT and hang out with friends and have my best friend from home, Alex, come visit.
Although campus wasn't too busy since a lot of students went home we had a good time. On Friday, my roommates and I went and saw Valentine's Day over at the Essex Cinemas. Then we made dinner at the house and hung out on campus.
On Saturday, we all went to the men's hockey game over at Cairn's Arena in South Burlington. It was the senior game and they ended up coming from behind and winning which was great. A lot of the fans were from the opposing team (Castleton) so it was fun to be there and cheer on our school.
After the game, we went down to Church Street and the Vermont Pub & Brewery for dinner. Then returned back to campus to watch the Olympics.
Yesterday Alex left to go back to Boston and I went over to the Magic Hat Brewery in South Burlington. I am not a beer drinker but it was cool to see how beer is made. Here is a picture of my friend Meg, her brother Jamison, and I at the Magic Hat Brewery.

Today I went downtown to window shop with my roommate, Sarah, because it was so nice outside - probably only 35 degrees but still it's much better than being in the teens.
Tomorrow I think I might head to Smuggs for a round 2 of my attempt at skiing so hopefully I will have some good stories from that.

Go Go Go Go Go Go
My Saturday was full of crazy events. I got up around 9 and rushed over to snag the CCTA bus downtown (which is free for students with their SMC Knightcard).
Once downtown I ran some quick errands and grabbed some breakfast from Bruegger's Bagels. Then it was down to the waterfront to see my friends and roommates jump into Lake Champlain with the Penguin Plunge. It was 18 degrees out but they all braved the cold and plunged right in there.
You can check out the video of the group rounding the bend to take the plunge and their faces afterward on my YouTube channel @ ReeseSMC.
Here is the whole crew after their plunge.

After having them warm back up a few of us went up to Church Street for lunch at Kountry Kart Deli (definitely my favorite sandwich shop downtown). I don't think I have eaten a lunch so fast in my life - we were all starving after being outside in the cold for so long near the waterfront.
Once we warmed back up a bit at our house, my roommate and I went over to the men's basketball game against Bentley. It was probably the best game all year and SMC beat Bentley even though they were ranked much higher than us! To hear the whole story click here. It was great to see the gym packed with students and community members to help cheer on our team.
After such a long day I am exhausted but I have a lot of work to get done before the big game tonight. Enjoy your Superbowl Festivities everyone!

Weekend Activties
So this Saturday was packed with events on campus - especially for seniors. During the day I went to the SMC Dance Team Show and saw some of my classmates bust a move. If you check out my YouTube page (http://bit.ly/aeLGXD) you can see the SMC Dance Team perform two of their numbers 'Jai Ho' and 'Roxanne'.
Then at night we had our Senior Formal down in South Burlington. My roommates and I got all dressed up and boarded onto the busses to get to the Sunset Ballroom. Unfortunately it was freezing so for a while our outfits were covered by many layers of jackets and other warm things.
Enjoy the videos from the Dance Show and here are a few pictures from the Senior Formal.

Checked Off My List
I have been a student as SMC for 3.5 years now and I have finally done it - I went to Smugglers Notch. I have bought the awesome season pass through SMC for only $30 every year in hopes of going to the mountain and going either skiing or snowboarding.
I leased some equipment from the Alpine Shop in South Burlington so I have my own pair of ski equipment.
My roommate, Kelly, and I ventured out early on Sunday morning to the mountain which is about a 40 minute drive. When we got there I struggled putting on the boots - that should have been warning enough that it would be a long morning.
After getting on the boots, pants, jacket, gloves, scarf, hat, etc. and walking up the drive to the lift I was already exhausted (in case you didn't know ski equipment is heavy). Kelly gave me a few tips which needed to be repeated about 100 million times during the day like "make a pizza slice" or "don't criss cross applesauce" - these sayings only made me hungry, not learn what I was doing. When I took a digger trying to get down to the chair lift I think Kelly finally realized what she had gotten herself into.
My favorite part of the day was the lift - so lovely and you got to relax and enjoy the view. After those quick 3 minutes up the mountain we realized we were about to go on a blue square trail and I haven't skied since I was about 5. It took a few hours to get down the mountain - a personal best if you ask me and after many times falling down I was back where we started.
Today is Monday and my whole body hurts - definitely a much harder workout than going to the gym. But I am so glad I finally got to take advantage of this amazing deal we have at SMC that other schools are not as fortunate to have. To fully grasp my amazing feat here is a picture of the trail I took down yesterday. In lieu of flowers and cards, please send congratulations to my comment box.
